The Oasis 

I wanted to add a little something from Jeffrey R. Holland since his passing. I have always loved his talk from October 2009 general conference titled "Safety for the Soul." I love his testimony of the Book of Mormon and this is one of my favorite quotes from that talk and I would recommend listening to it!

Christmas with the Sweat Family!


Merry Christmas to all and happy new year to come! I had an amazing week but Im going to start with last p day because it was pretty exciting. If you have heard the song "Friends in low places" by Garth Brooks, you might remember that he mentions going down to the Oasis.🏝 Welp turns out the Oasis is a restaurant that is here in my area!! So of course when we found that out we had to go there for a district lunch! Its a massive restaurant right on the edge of Lake Travis, but not only is it a restaurant, its like a little town too. Pictures describe it best so I'll just attach pictures of it. But if anyone happens to vacation to Austin I would recommend going to the Oasis because I know I am when I come back here someday! 

I've always wondered what Christmas would be like on the mission and now I can say that it honestly was one of my top favorite Christmas ever!🎄 At first it definitely felt weird and a little sad to he away from home, but once I decided to just enjoy my Christmas here it was so much fun!! Especially since I realized I will probably only get one Christmas here in Austin. But we mainly hung out together as a district, called family, got to play some b-ball with some young men, and then had an extra long member dinner at the end of the day. We weren't allowed to proselyte because oddly enough, people don't like to talk about christ on Christmas with the missionaries! I will never forget my first Christmas as a missionary though and I'm so grateful to be spending this time serving in Austin Texas! 

Speaking of having friends way down in this low place of Austin, our friend Jordan is all set to be baptized this Saturday!🌊 I'm legitimately so happy for him and this choice that he is making to make a covenant with his heavenly father! I cannot wait for this Saturday especially since this will be my first baptism! 

Other than that we don't have other progressing friends at this point. We taught Deborah, our new member, about Patriarchal blessings though and now she can't wait to get hers!! She's so awesome and I always feel the spirit when I am with her. We did have a fun conversation with a seventh day Adventist who basically bashed us for calling Sunday the sabbath and not Saturday. So that was entertaining. 

Spiritual thought: 
This one is actually more mission advice or something I have learned on my mission. I was talking to a young man in my ward who is a little nervous about serving a mission, and he asked how to always stay positive and happy while serving. I told him to make sure to always be yourself. On the mission, there is so many standards and other missionaries to compare yourself too. Some missionaries completely change themselves to try to be like other people. This applies to normal life too for everyone not serving missions. The lord made you who you are, with your own personality and spiritual gifts! Don't change that just to please others!

  How's it going everyone!!! This week was so fun meeting everyone in my district! From the first class we all connected immediately and get along so well. Being in a district of 16 guys who all just graduated high schools feels like I'm really just back in high school hanging out with the boys. Being here for only 5 days so far just feels like I'm st FSY making a bunch of new friends! We love learning new portugeuse slang and our favorite one right now is muito bom. It literally just translates to very good and you do this snapping thing with your hand while your saying it! I also got made district leader on Thursday which really just adds a couple meetings per week for me and I have to lead a lot of the district council meetings, but other than that it's just really fun!   Bom dia everyone!!! I have now completed week two of the MTC! It was an awesome week  since I now know where everything is here and i'm just getting into the groove of everything here. My district is also still awesome and I'm also getting into the groove of being DL and remembering everything I'm supposed to be doing for that.  We still love to go play volleyball every morning at 6:40 and the basketball gym reopened this week so we started doing that as well. We love challenging other districts in both games and are still undefeated. All the guys in my district are like 5'10'' or taller, all except for Elder Morris who is like 5'6'' but hes one of the funniest guys. He's buff and we buzzed his head on Friday night, and he just says the most out of pocket funny things all the time! Plus, in portugeuse the r makes the h sound so we call him mo-hees. "This ain't my first rodeo!"

Sunset in Texas! First week in Texas and in the mission field is now complete! And I take back my earlier statement, it has felt like my first rodeo. But in a good way! It is quite different than the MTC and there is so many things I am trying to learn right now. I got a great trainer though and what are the odds he is also from Kaysville and went to Davis high! If any of you back home knew Clint Sanders he is now my trainer and he is awesome.  I do have a good story from my travels getting here that quite literally felt like riding a bull in a rodeo. So to put it simply my original flight here had an engine fail 30 min into our flight!! Everything was going smoothly until all of the sudden the plane felt like it slightly dropped and then it felt like turbulence on steroids! The captian came over the intercom and I only remember him saying "Stay calm, we have engine failure, fasten your seatbelts we are heading back to SLC!" So we went back to SLC and they got us another flig...
